A car has crashed into an escalator at a Melbourne shopping centre, injuring several people and killing a man.

Police said the crash happened on the second floor of the main escalator of a shopping centre in the CBD about 10:30pm on Friday.

The car hit the second level and was thrown off, hitting an adjacent store and causing the escalator to topple, said the Metropolitan Police Service.

The escalator collapsed.

It is believed the man was travelling with his son and a third person, who was in the car, was in a nearby shop when the crash occurred.

Police believe the man and the third person were on their way to a different shop when they were struck.

The two people on the escalators were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The victim’s name has not been released.
